Liz England - Level/Game/System Design Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts

Nintendo DS

Sandbox / Puzzle / Platformer

An innovative title that launched last year, Scribblenauts allows the player to summon any object they can think of to solve puzzles or just enact hilarious situations.

I worked in a variety of design roles, from level design, scripting, and developing our dictionary database.

Scribblenauts launched in September 2009 to much critical acclaim and awards for most innovative, best handheld, best puzzle, and best of E3.

For this project, I assumed a variety of design roles including the following:

  • Developed our dictionary base of objects, including categorization and art requests
  • Identified main gameplay systems required for those objects to react within player expectations (i.e. temperature, containers, material types, fire interaction, etc.)
  • Implementated and iterated on objects through our Objectnaut tool
  • Initial paper level design concepts for both action and puzzle gameplay
  • Used proprietary tools for 2D level implementation and scripting
